United States Holy Days Of Obligation

By Decree of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (now the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops), promulgated November 17, 1992 by the Most Reverend Daniel Edward Pilarczyk, Archbishop of Cincinnati, and confirmed by the Apostolic See on July 4, 1992, the Holy Days of Obligation for Latin Rite Catholics in the United States are:

  • The Immaculate Conception

  • The Nativity of Our Lord (Christmas)

  • St. Mary, the Mother of God

  • The Ascension of Our Lord (observed on the following Sunday in many dioceses)

  • The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

  • All Saints' Day

However, whenever January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated.
